JOB DESCRIPTION

The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) is seeking a highly motivated full-time Research Associate with advanced skills in empirical microeconomics of development. The ideal candidate would have at least a master’s degree in economics (preferably a PhD or advanced stage of a PhD). A solid experience analyzing large individual/household-level datasets using quasi-experimental evaluation methods is essential. Demonstrated publications would be a plus. This position also allows the position holder time to do independent research.

Responsibilities

  • Compile, clean, and analyze large datasets
  • Contribute to research papers, including creating tables and figures, writing, and reviewing
  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Contribute to organizing conferences, workshops, and other research-related activities
  • Review research papers produced as part of research projects
  • Contribute to the organization and implementation of fieldwork, which includes sampling, conducting power calculations, drafting and finalizing survey instruments, and conducting interviews
  • Design research studies, including setting research questions and determining research methods.

Requirements

  • Strong quantitative skills in econometrics and statistical methods, as shown through experience in applying quasi-experimental methods. Experience in sampling, conducting power calculations, and randomized control trials would be preferred
  • Experience in processing household-level or other micro-level datasets
  • At least a master’s degree in economics or public policy from an internationally reputable university
  • At least two years of research experience (post-graduate research is applicable). This can be reflected in publications in academic papers as a co-author or examples of research activities
  • Interest in microeconomics of development, especially in education, health, social protection, or poverty in the context of Asia and the Pacific
  • Advanced Stata skills
  • Fieldwork experience in developing countries is desirable
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

Appointment Terms

Research Associates serve for limited terms as independent contractors in a personal capacity, with an initial 1-year contract and a possible 1-year extension based on performance. The maximum duration of service is 2 years in total. Social insurance is not provided. Research Associates are neither officers nor staff of ADBI and work under the direct supervision of ADBI professional staff and the overall guidance of Vice-Chair of Research.
