COORDINATOR, GENEBANK INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

About the position

The CGIAR network of international Genebanks seeks to appoint a motivated individual to take Genebank Information Management to the next level. He/she will work at the interface between Genebank operations and information systems. As such, he/she needs to be able to (a) understand and translate user requirements of Genebank staff into system requirements and specifications as well as (b) educate users about best practices of inventory & information management. He/she will be based at the new Future Seeds Genebank at the Colombia campus of the Alliance Bioversity-CIAT but will be regularly visiting and working closely with the Genebanks at other CGIAR centers.

 

Key duties & responsibilities

  • Support the further development, implementation, and harmonization of the GRIN Global Community Edition (GGCE) database across all CGIAR genebanks.
  • Lead the Community of Practice (CoP) of CGIAR genebank data managers and get familiar with the needs and circumstances under which the germplasm collections are being conserved.
  • Liaise with colleagues working on (a) the harmonization of genebank processes and (b) data quality and curation to elaborate consolidated user requirements such as consensus workflows, agreed-upon data-collection and stop/go decision points, and data-quality checks.
  • Act as an interface between the CoP and GGCE developers at the Crop Trust (backend database & main user interface) and the Alliance & other genebanks (GGCE-linked mobile apps)
  • Report consolidated user requirements to software developers and regularly update the CoP about their implementation.
  • Evaluate software improvements, coordinate testing of pilots with users, and create reports documenting user feedback.
  • Provide regular updates to the CGIAR Genebank leadership and support the collection of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for annual reports.
  • Coordinate GGCE training workshops and develop a long-term GGCE sustainability plan considering typical lifecycles of comparable software platforms.
  • Contribute to the design, planning, development and integration of Genebank data and databases in the context of the Global Information System (GLIS), Enterprise Breeding System (EBS) and other relevant data systems connecting to Genebank data.
  • Coordinate GGCE training workshops and develop a long-term GGCE sustainability plan considering typical lifecycles of comparable software platforms.

 

 

Requirements

Required qualifications and experience.
  • An MSc or PhD degree in genetic resources, breeding, genetics, agronomy, or plant production combined with first-hand experience in system/software engineering.
  • Alternatively, a degree in system engineering with hands-on experience in working with agricultural researchers, ideally in the context of Genebanks.
  • Familiarity with Genebank operations, including the conservation of seed and clonal collections, germplasm health testing, field operations, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with system-engineering and agile software-development principles and processes, including experience with UML diagramming.
  • Ability to comprehend and optimize organizational processes supported by a proficiency in project management principles and tools.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in written form, with Spanish and/or French being a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, experienced in working with multicultural and multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Competency in personal organization, priority setting, and managing multiple tasks.
  • Values information sharing and continuous improvement in a cooperative atmosphere of constructive evaluation and learning.
Terms of employment
This is an internationally recruited position based in Cali, Colombia. The initial contract will be for two years subject to a probation period of six months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources. This position is graded at BG10 level, in a scale of BG01 to BG14 (BG14 being the highest level according to the Alliance job classification framework policy).
