Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of about 150 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The consultant will be under the supervision of the Head of the Work Programme of IPBES. The consultant will conduct the following tasks: • Oversee the coordination of the IPBES monitoring assessment, in accordance with the procedures for the preparation of IPES deliverables (see decision IPBES-3/3, annex I); • Assist with finalisation of the selection of experts for the assessment; • Oversee the preparation of assessment-related meetings including documents and logistics; • Collaborate with the IPBES secretariat and the co-chairs of the assessment to provide regular feedback on the progress of the assessment report; • Provide support to the co-chairs in the delivery of their assessment-related duties and assist all experts with the delivery of their work for the assessment; • Provide support to the IPBES secretariat for the preparation of official documents.
Qualifications/special skills
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in biological or environmental science or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted instead of the advanced university degree. • Experience in monitoring and evaluation is required; • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to write clear, concise drafts in English; • Experience in planning and organizing international events and/or conferences is desirable; • Good organizational and personal management skills, with ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through are desirable; • Knowledge of IPBES, biodiversity, ecosystem services and environment-related matters will be an advantage; • Experience in working with national or global assessment processes will be an advantage; • Experience in international biodiversity projects.
Languages
Fluency in oral and written English is required.
